Pewter is commonly used to prepare ornaments and other jewelry items and is very popular with millions of people from across the globe. The main ingredient in pewter is tin, which is a very soft metal that makes jewelry made from pewter relatively soft as well. However they are easy to maintain and with little care can be made to last for several years.

Firstly if you have a piece of pewter jewelry which you have owned for a long time, it is essential to remove dust and any grime particles that may be sticking to it. Dip the item in soap water for a few minutes and this should help to remove all the dirt. Rinse the item with clean water and wipe it with a soft cloth.

Pewter today, is available in different forms and each type needs to be polished in a certain way. To get the best results, buy pewter polish from your nearby departmental store. Refrain from using brass or silver polish as they do not give ideal results.

For polished pewter, dab a little bit of the polish on the cloth and apply in a circular motion on the item. Use clean bits of cloth as you move from one region to the next. If you don’t have a polish, you can also use 1 t-spoon of salt, 1 cup of vinegar and half a cup of flour to create a paste which you can apply on the item and then rinse and wash.

With satin pewter, the surface is usually smooth but does not have the sheen of polished pewter. It should be noted that even with the use of pewter polish you cannot get the results like you can achieve with polished pewter. You can however maintain the look and smooth texture of the item with a little care. Use steel wool every 2 years to buff the item or ornament. Steel wool is easily available at your nearest drug and grocery stores.

Oxidized pewter items are specifically created to have the old antiquated look. Maintenance for these items is very simple and you can clean and polish them by just dipping the ornament in a solution of soap water. Rinse and wipe with a soft cloth.
