Champion of Liberty: General John Stark. One of New England's most famous soldiers, General John Stark was a recognized leader among the colonial generals. He was a hero at the battles of Bunker Hill and Bennington. Ten years after the Battle of Bennington, General Stark was invited to speak at a celebration honoring his victory. A humble man, he declined the invitation, ending his letter with the words, "Live free or die." On May 1, 1945 these immortal words became the official motto for the State of New Hampshire. This original Hampshire Pewter Christmas ornament depicts General Stark astride his favorite horse, the great bay Hessian.
