Maple Lodge - Castle in the Clouds
Castle in the Clouds has commissioned us to do a 7th custom
ornament for their series. Castle in the Clouds is a mountaintop estate,
overlooking the surrounding Ossipee Mountain Range. It boasts a 16-room mansion
set on the 6,300 acre piece of land. The “castle” was built in 1913-1914 by
shoe manufacturer, Thomas Gustave Plant for his second wife, Olive. He named
the estate Lucknow, supposedly after the city in India. The house is a
Craftsmen style house designed by Boston architect, J. Williams Beal. After
Plant’s death, the home was briefly owned by Fred C. Tobey before it was
purchased by Richard and Donald Robie in 1956. The pair decided to open it up
as a tourist attraction.
Today, Castle in the Clouds is owned and managed by the
Castle Preservation Society, a private 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. The
property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Castle,
gift store, art gallery, Carriage House, and café are open to the public from
May to early October. For more information or to schedule a visit check their website at https://www.castleintheclouds.org
