Castle in the Clouds is a mountaintop estate, overlooking the surrounding Ossipee Mountain Range. It boasts a 16-room mansion set on the 6,300 acre piece of land. The “castle” was built in 1913-1914 by shoe manufacturer, Thomas Gustave Plant for his second wife, Olive. He named the estate Lucknow, supposedly after the city in India. The house is a Craftsmen style house designed by Boston architect, J. Williams Beal. After Plant’s death, the home was briefly owned by Fred C. Tobey before it was purchased by Richard and Donald Robie in 1956. The pair decided to open it up as a tourist attraction.
Today, Castle in the Clouds is owned and managed by the Castle Preservation Society, a private 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Castle, gift store, art gallery, Carriage House, and café are open to the public from May to early October.
This is the 6th custom ornament we have created for Castle in the Clouds. The ornament features a gazebo and arcade, part of the Lucknow Estate. This is a popular location for weddings with a 180-degree view of Lake Winnipesaukee. It is bordered by the Castle Garden, a meticulously landscaped lawn with lots of flowers and a gilded age fountain.
