Waterfall in the Clouds
Castle in the Clouds has commissioned us to do a third
custom ornament for their series. Castle in the Clouds is a mountaintop estate,
overlooking the surrounding Ossipee Mountain Range. It boasts a 16-room mansion
set on the 6,300 acre piece of land. The “castle” was built in 1913-1914 by
shoe manufacturer, Thomas Gustave Plant for his second wife, Olive. He named the
estate Lucknow, supposedly after the city in India. The house is a Craftsmen
style house designed by Boston architect, J. Williams Beal. After Plant’s
death, the home was briefly owned by Fred C. Tobey before it was purchased by Richard
and Donald Robie in 1956. The pair decided to open it up as a tourist attraction.
Today, Castle in the Clouds is owned and managed by the
Castle Preservation Society, a private 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. The
property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Castle, gift store, art gallery, Carriage House, and café are open to the
public from May to early October.
The waterfall depicted on the custom pewter ornament is
called the Falls of Song, a 40-foot plunge waterfall. It flows from Shannon
Brook and it is a short 0.1 mile walk from the main road, however, if you
continue on there is a connecting 0.5 mile trail called Brook Walk that passes
six other named waterfalls: Bridal Veil Falls, Emerald Pool Falls, Harriets
Cascades, Whittier Falls, Twin Falls, and Roaring Falls. These beautifully
detailed ornaments will be sold at the Castle in the Clouds gift shop, so on
your next visit be sure to pick one up.
