“Our readers know they will find something special when they visit a Yankee Magazine 2005 Travel Guide to New England Editors’ Choice,” said Michael Carlton, editor of YANKEE Magazine and the Travel Guide. “We are thrilled to inform our readers of Hampshire Pewter and encourage them to experience its unique flair. You are never far from a great destination in New England.”
Hampshire Pewter, with two locations in Wolfeboro, celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2004. The recently rebuilt Mill Street location contains the factory where each piece of Hampshire Pewter is hand cast by skilled craftsmen. Visitors can take a guided tour of the pewter workshop and watch pure tin being mixed with other fine metals to make the special “Queen’s Metal” alloy which is then poured into bronze molds and cast into unique designs. A highlight of the tour is watching the pewter pieces being finished on a lathe, bringing out the beautiful traditional finish. Factory tours are available beginning right after Memorial Day and continue until Columbus Day. The tours are free and are offered weekdays at 10, 11, 2 and 3.
