Our Tradition

Soldering Pewter

Individual castings are joined by skillful soldering to create classic designs.

Pewter is a metal which for many centuries has played an important role in our lives. It predates the voyage of Christopher Columbus by more than a thousand years. In the United States, we associate pewter with our own colonial history. We think of a blazing hearth in a rural cottage, or the elegance of a Victorian mansion.

Nowhere is pewter's tradition stronger than in New England, where strength, classic beauty, and lasting value are so important. The New Englander of today, like our colonial forefathers, considers his pewter a treasure to be used and displayed with pride.

It is from this tradition of pride that Hampshire Pewter comes. Founded in 1974, Hampshire Pewter has revived the craft of the colonial pewterer.

Hampshire Pewter is located in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, the oldest summer resort community in North America. Here, in a quaint New England village, on the shores of beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee, Hampshire Pewter practices the colonial pewterer's craft in a modern environment.

Turning the Pewter

Each piece of pewter is then turned on a lathe.

Here you can watch us mix pure tin with other fine metals to our own Queen's Metaltm pewter. We'll cast this liquid pewter into shapes using bronze molds we designed ourselves. Then, we join these castings by careful soldering to create our classically shaped goblets, tankards, and candlesticks. After joining we cut away all of the rough grey metal and carve the fine details of your traditional designs. You can also watch us finish figurines, spoons, and our famous Christmas ornaments with the same skillful care, gently buffing with soft cotton wheels and special compounds to give them their soft pewter luster.

To each piece of Hampshire Pewter we add our distinctive "touchmark" to identify it as a true Hampshire Pewter original. This mark is your assurance of Hampshire Pewter's enduring quality.
